Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende
Denis Avey was born in Essex in 1919. He fought in the desert during the Second World War and was captured and held as a Prisoner of War in a camp near Auschwitz III. In 2010 he received a British Hero of the Holocaust award. Denis lives in Derbyshire.

a good insight into how things looked from the perspective of somebody involved in the dreadful times of the 2nd WW. An extraordinary read of an extraordinary story of survival in the most brutal of times. Thank goodness it worked out that Avey could tell his tale.
Um es vorweg zu nehmen: mir geht es nicht darum das im Krieg und im Konzentrationslager erlittene des Autors zu schmälern. Über Trauma und welcher Anstrengung es bedarf über derartige Ereignisse zu sprechen koennen die Nachkriegsgenerationen aus der ich auch komme nur spekulieren.Dennoch, es bedarf der kristischen Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Buch, insbesondere mit seiner Titelgebung. Denn nur ein ganz kleiner Teil des Buches widmet sich dem 'Einbruch' des Autors in Auschwitz. Und so groß der Mut und auch das Ansinnen über das Drama Auschwitz aus erster Hand berichten zu wollen dem Autor anzurechnen ist, so wenig wirklich spezifisches erfahren wir beim Lesen neues, was wir nicht schon über die Vernichtungslager wussten. Auch weil der Hauptteil des Buches sich autobiografisch in größten Teilen mit dem Rekruten- und Soldatenleben des Autors vorher beschäftigt bleibt es hinter den geschürten Erwartungen zurück. Natürlich ist es eine aussergwöhnliche Biografie eines Mannes, der großen Mut bewiesen hat, als er für wenige Stunden die Identität mit einem KZ-Insassen tauschte, um vom Kriegsgefangenenlager in das Konzentartionslager von Auschwitz zu gelangen. Aber um über diese wohl einmalige Leistung zu berichten, hätte es nicht dieses reisserischen Titels bedurft.Dennoch, es bleibt ein lesenswertes Buch, wenngleich es nicht, wie im Klappentext beschrieben, 'das wichtigste Buch' ist.
